Muskegon Jayhawks Battle at Jayhawk Open
Three Individual Titles Secured; Eva Sepulveda Crowned Women’s Champ
MUSKEGON, MI –Muskegon Community College (MCC) hosted the annual Jayhawk Open last Saturday. Against a competitive field featuring teams from across the region—including Grand Valley State University—the Jayhawks held their own, crowning three individual champions and placing ten wrestlers in the top four of their respective brackets.
Dominance at 133 Pounds
The story of the day was the Jayhawks' absolute stranglehold on the 133-pound weight class. MCC placed four wrestlers in the top five, culminating in an all-Muskegon final. Colin Kuhn (26-2) captured the title, finishing his day with a 11-1 major decision over teammate Payton Paguada. Kuhn was nearly untouchable throughout the tournament, recording a 23-3 technical fall and a lightning-fast pin (1:10) in the semifinals.
Championship Highlights
In addition to Kuhn's stellar performance, two other Jayhawks battled their way to the top of the podium:
-
Jack Guerrero (125 lbs): Guerrero improved his season record to an incredible 24-1. He navigated a tough bracket with veteran poise, defeating Grand Valley State's Simon Dominguez 2-0 in a gritty, defensive championship bout.
-
Jacob Gillison (149 lbs): Gillison secured his first college tournament championship, grinding out a 10-6 decision in the semifinals before securing the gold with a 9-4 victory over GVSU's David Clemons.
