Muskegon Jayhawks Big Defeat Over Onondaga & Garret College
Niagara, NY-The Jayhawk wrestlers traveled to Niagara, New York last weekend where they competed in the Thunderwolves Duals on Friday night and the Thunderwolves Open on Saturday.
Muskegon was 2-0 in the duals, soundly defeating Onondaga Community College and Garrett College.
On Saturday, the Jayhawks were impressive. Paced by All-American Jack Guerrero, Colin Kuhn, and Kyron Zoet, Muskegon took home championships at 125, 133, and 149 respectively.
Kuhn's run at 133 was particularly remarkable. Payton Paguada's 4-1 record was good for a 3rd place finish-his only loss coming to Kuhn in the semi-finals. Anthony Cage placed second, losing to Kuhn in the finals. Kuhn finished the day with three falls, good for 19 team points. "Colin looked great. He really has some momentum going right now, and he is wrestling with a lot of confidence," said head coach Cody Carpenter. "To sweep the top three places at 133 was fun. It is a great example of how competitive our practice room is. Paguada had four pins. Cage had two majors. We had a fourth wrestler in there too, Kyle Holt, who also won a match by fall today. It's awesome watching these guys make each other better."
In the finals at 125, Guerrero defeated highly ranked Jaron Barrientos of Niagara. Barrientos and Guerrero split last month when Niagara visited Muskegon. "I'm proud of Jack. That was a good win for him. He was poised and wrestled a very smart match. This is probably the last time they'll see each other before nationals, and this win will help Jack with seeding in March," continued Carpenter.
At 149, Kyron Zoet was dominant. Zoet was 4-0 on the day, matching Kuhn's 19 team points with a fall, two technical falls, and a major decision. "Kyron is firing on all cylinders right now-he's doing the right things to put himself in positions to win," said Carpenter.
Ian Cook was runner-up at 141, finishing the day with a 3-1 record and a major decision victory, good for eleven team points.
Other place winners were Darnell Mack and Zephyr Fegley, who placed 3rd and 4th respectively. Mack went 4-1 on the day with two pins and a major decision, while Fegley finished with a record of 3-2 with two technical falls.
Jimmy Thommen (125), Kyle Holt (133) Jacob Gillison (149), Carson Gorton (149), Caden Brown (157), Daniel Manier (157), and Harrison Meekhof (165) all won matches on Saturday.
The Jayhawks will travel to Triton Community College on December 13 for the highly competitive Art Kraft Invitational. "That will be a good test for us as we finish the semester. Lots of traditionally strong teams from the mid-west will be at Triton. I like where we are as a team though," said Carpenter.
