Jayhawks defeated the Alpena community college lumberjacks 80-55
The Muskegon community college Jayhawks defeated the Alpena community college lumberjacks 80-55 Saturday evening in conference play.
The Northern Conference matchup was a conference opener for both teams. The first half was comprised of both teams capitalizing defensively, knowing each other's strength and weaknesses. Neither team managed to create advantages offensively, but Muskegon led heading into halftime 30-29.
The second half Muskegon exhibited the same defensive prowess, but the Jayhawks exploded on the offensive end, pouring in 50 points. The Jayhawks outscored Alpena 50-26 in the second half of play to improve to a 1-0 record in conference play. The Jayhawks were led by sophomore guard Lamarkis Graham, who finished with 21 points (6-14 from behind the arc), nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Freshman guard Darryl Thompkins was an offensive playmaker, finishing with 20 points, seven rebounds, and nine assists. Sophomore forward Ny'Zhem Marshall added 19 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks. Sophomore forward Joel Katembo added eight points and snagged an astounding 16 rebounds. Katembo also blocked four shots.
The Jayhawks sit atop the Northern Conference standings and hope to continue their winning ways as they next face-off at home against Delta College on Wednesday, January 14th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
